ABOUT BALLYBOLEY DEXTERS

PFLA_certified_member_grn_purple.png

We are a small family run herd of Pedigree Dexter cattle that has grown slowly since 2009 when we bought Fiona and Bess, two in-calf heifers.  We graze our cattle on the shores of Strangford Lough on the  Arts Peninsula and at National Trust Orlock Farm, County Down.

Over time we have gained a better understanding of Dexter Cattle and the need to improve and increase their numbers which were almost pushed to extinction in the 1970’s. We are privileged to have cattle in our herd that are from the bloodline of the Bellevue Zoo Herd. This was the last remaining registered Dexter herd of any size in all of Ireland, North and South, in the 1990’s.

We recognised that the Dexter was the perfect cow to allow us to introduce regenerative farming techniques that satisfied our desire to farm with nature, support the Dexter Breed and produce high quality affordable beef for local customers - Locavores.

As a family we enjoy ‘showing’ our cattle at agricultural shows and we have a team of willing helpers that support us.  We have won rosettes and trophies with animals that we have bought into the herd and also with cattle that we have bred ourselves.

We are members of 'The Nature Friendly Farming Network' and we are Certified 'Pasture For Life' Beef Farmers and Retailers.
